Sama Alshaibi is a world renowned conceptual photographer who exhibited at Venice Biennale in 2013 and her most appraised project is named “Silsila” (“link”, in Arabic) Linking the Body and the Desert.
Alshaibi was born to an Iraqi father and Palestinian mother; this is why her work reflects mainly the warfare environment with its social and spiritual issues.
The Silsila project is composed of photographs depicting frozen symbolic movements of a dancer engaged in a magnificent performance that’s taking place out of time and space, in a magical surrounding.
In the Silsila project, the ritual of dancing in a pristine space purifies the body and spirit of the scars left by war and suffering and recreates the primordial and healing connection with nature.
